Hey,
I've learned 1,000's of vocab words over the years with one simple trick.
What is it?
Showering daily.
You're probably wondering if I've had one too many glasses of wine today.
After all, you've been showering for a long time, right?
Well, it's a really simple technique.
- Before you go into the shower, identify 5 words that you want to learn.
- Create a sentence that links those 5 words.
- The sentence doesn't have to make sense. It just has to be highly memorable.
- Keep repeating that sentence to yourself in the shower.
- See if you can remember it until you're done showering.
Voila!
You'll find that the words are stuck in your head.
You'll still need lots of examples to really get to know the word, but you'll have planted the seeds for truly mastering it and making it your own.
I came up with this technique while doing crazy language immersion summer programs at Princeton and Duke University.
They're infamous for getting through an entire year's worth of coursework in just 2 months.
There was literally not enough time to learn everything, unless if I studied in the shower!
But I found out that it's actually a valuable technique on its own.
Repeat this daily, and you can learn an entire language in the shower!
Til next time,
Alan and the FluentU Team
